Dr. Mark McGee is a historian specializing in Joseph Smith and early Latter-day Saint history who serves on FAIR’s Advisory Board. He is a Senior Historian in the Church History Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mark studied history at Brigham Young University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree; Utah State University, where he earned a master’s degree; and Arizona State University, where he earned his PhD. He also received training from the Institute for the Editing of Historical Documents, sponsored by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission of the National Archives and Records Administration.

He previously served as Senior Research and Review Editor for the Joseph Smith Papers Project, specializing in documentary editing methodology and document analysis.

Mark has coedited several volumes of the Joseph Smith Papers as well as Foundational Texts of Mormonism: Examining Major Early Sources and Producing Ancient Scripture: Joseph Smith’s Translation Projects in the Development of Mormon Christianity. He has also published articles on Joseph Smith and early Latter-day Saint history in scholarly venues.
