Brad Wilcox, “Have You Been Saved By Grace?” How Do We Respond?

Transcript available here.

Brad Wilcox is a professor in the Department of Ancient Scripture at Brigham Young University where he also enjoys working with such programs as Especially for Youth, Women’s Conference, and Campus Education Week. He is the author of the book The Continuous Atonement and the BYU devotional “His Grace is Sufficient.” Brad grew up in Provo, Utah, except for childhood years spent in Ethiopia, Africa. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chile and later returned to that country to preside over the Chile Santiago East Mission from 2003 to 2006. He and his family have also lived for a time in New Zealand and Spain where he directed study abroad programs for Brigham Young University. Brad has served as a member of the Sunday School General Board. He and his wife, Debi, have four children and six grandchildren. Reading, writing, teaching, and traveling are some of his favorite things. He loves Peanut M&M’s and pepperoni pizza, but he realizes that doesn’t sound too healthy so he is really trying hard to learn to love salads.

Love Bro. Wilcox. Thank you for sharing this. I’m on disability and cannot get to conferences so I really appreciate you making these inspiring talks available. This was tremendously uplifting.

I can not count the number of times I have been faced with this charge from people outside the Church. Here is how I handle this: I ask them what it is that they think one must do to be saved, and then I wait patiently for their answer (have faith in Jesus, accept Jesus, say the sinner’s prayer, whatever). Then I say this: Well, it looks to me like it is the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who are the ones who actually believe in being saved by grace, because we believe you don’t have to do anything at all, that everyone will be raised to great glory based on the Atonement of Jesus Christ alone (except those who commit the unpardonable sin, who will be raised to no glory).
If you don’t understand this, refer to statements by Joseph Smith regarding the nature of the Telestial Kingdom and the glory of Telestial beings.
The problem that non-LDS have is that, since their perspective is one heaven and one hell, they have to lump salvation into an either/or situation. If you believe in grace alone under that scenario, that doesn’t leave much room for an understanding of the role of works.
