I appreciate the awareness of the Meso-American pattern of near-death experiences as a shamanic or holy calling experience. As I have been studying the Book of Alma over the last several months, I was struck by this repetition from Alma to Lamoni to the crowd at Lamoni’s court, and while I am unfamiliar with Native American cultural practices in pre Columbian times, it was clear that these patterns were culturally “normed” for having a spiritually revelatory and life-altering experience.
