Elements of a story can be symbolic, the forbidden fruit probably wasn’t an actual fruit but it is a symbol, but Adam and Eve were real persons living in a real place. Saying the creation part of Genesis is all symbolic or all literal is kind of silly. And sometimes what looks symbolic at first glance can be literal. My body is literally made from the dust of the the earth, and there is a process where the molecules in the dust of the earth become food which then through another process becomes the stuff my body is made of, so if my body is made of the dust of the earth literally, why not Adam’s as well?
