A Nagging Feeling; A Gift

Welcome to the Old Testament. I remember the first year I prepared to teach from the Old Testament back in 2022, and I remember being quite overwhelmed with the idea of it. The Old Testament is a very foreign way of writing; it holds a lot of cultural context that can make it difficult. As I worked to prepare messages that year, I found that I wasn’t totally wrong in my apprehension. The Lord Looketh on the Heart

In his October 2025 General Conference address, “The Lord Looketh on the Heart,” Elder Sergio R. Barcellos taught that God’s measure of discipleship is fundamentally different from the world’s. While people often evaluate faithfulness by outward appearance, performance, or visible success, the Lord looks first at the heart—our desires, intentions, and willingness to turn toward Him.

Elder Barcellos emphasized that this inward focus does not diminish obedience or covenant living. Rather, it places them in their proper order. True discipleship begins with the heart. When the heart is turned to Christ, outward obedience follows naturally and meaningfully.

This invites a careful reconsideration of how discipleship is sometimes measured.

All God needs to accomplish His purposes and to help us become who He wants us to become is for each of us to turn our hearts fully to Him.

Jesus’ Lineage; Our Lineage

Other Bible Translations

Just in time for Old Testament, the Church has reshaped its policy around Bible translations. While the KJV remains the official Bible of the English-speaking Church, Latter-day Saints are now strongly encouraged, it seems, to use other translations as well. This has the effect of making scripture more accessible and understandable, and increases the joy and enthusiasm of scripture study. It helps us communicate better with our Christian neighbors, who are unlikely to use the KJV, and helps us avoid the problems that come from only reading the KJV. The Family Proclamation—Words from God

In his October 2025 General Conference address, “The Family Proclamation—Words from God,” Elder Ronald A. Rasband testified that The Family: A Proclamation to the World is not merely a cultural statement or institutional guideline, but revealed doctrine given by God through His prophets. He explained how the proclamation came forth through prayer, prophetic councils, and spiritual unanimity—and why its teachings deserve reverence in every generation.

Yet its clarity has also made it controversial. As social views on family, marriage, and gender continue to shift, many struggle with how the proclamation fits in a changing world.

This raises a common and sincere question:
