Consider Conference: Keeping the Messages of General Conference With Us

January 6, 2024 by FAIR Staff

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints look forward to the General Conferences of the church as a time to hear the word of God and listen to His servants as they share messages they have been guided to share. Over the course of the five sessions of Conference, members often feel inspired by the talks, music and spiritual promptings they receive. It’s an amazing experience to be in General Conference…but once General Conference is over, how can you keep it with you? How can you let General Conference change you? Alma the Younger said it this way: [Read more…] about Consider Conference: Keeping the Messages of General Conference With Us

A Mortal Davidic Servant?

November 3, 2023 by FAIR Staff

Some Old Testament scriptures tell about a latter-day “Davidic King,” “Davidic Servant,” or “Marred Servant.” The consensus of mainstream scholarship and teaching from leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is that this refers to Jesus Christ, when He rules the earth after His Second Coming. But some claim the “Servant” will be a mortal man who may or may not be a regularly-ordained Church leader. Because of the name “David,” some speculate Apostle David Bednar will be the Servant, and the same was said decades ago about the prophet David O. McKay.

Many who are not Apostles or Church leaders have claimed to be the “Davidic Servant.” Recently it was reported a woman and her brother kidnapped her teenage son because they believed him to be the “Davidic Servant.” The belief in a “Davidic Servant” is controversial and has been associated with criminal and tragic outcomes. To an unstable individual who feels entitled to power or special spiritual gifts, the “Davidic Servant” belief can be used to justify immoral and unscriptural actions. To an ordinary member of the Church, belief in a coming “Davidic Servant” can cause frustration with actual Church leaders, a feeling of spiritual superiority to them, and an eventual loss of faith in the restored gospel altogether.

A Mortal Davidic Servant: Refuting the Arguments

Believers in a coming mortal “Davidic Servant” use several arguments to support their claim. Most are completely wrong.

Time is running out to buy your FAIR Conference tickets!

July 26, 2023 by FAIR Staff

I know what you’re probably thinking at this point:

“Sure, this sounds like a great conference – but it’s really more for scholars than for an ‘ordinary’ person like me. Besides, I’m pretty busy right now. There’s just not enough time for me to go to a lot of meetings that really don’t have anything to do with me and my life. Maybe another time.”

But guess what? THIS is the time. And it has EVERYTHING to do with your life and the life of your loved ones. [Read more…] about Time is running out to buy your FAIR Conference tickets!

4 days left to buy conference tickets!

July 25, 2023 by FAIR Staff

“God loves all of us. He loves those of different faiths and those without any faith. He loves those who suffer. He loves the rich and poor alike. He loves people of every race and culture, the married or single, and those who experience same-sex attraction or identify as gay, lesbian, or bisexual. And God expects us to follow His example.”[1] In light of the fact that 4 out of 10 Americans now report that some of their close friends or family members are gays or lesbians, it’s increasingly important to know how best to support our loved ones while staying true to our faith. I know it’s easy to justify watching the free streaming at home, in your jammies. But just consider this – attending the 2023 FAIR Conference in person offers several advantages over viewing it virtually via streaming.

Main points to ponder

An if/then statement is a logical statement that expresses a conditional relationship between two parts: the “if” clause and the “then” clause. It’s a way of describing a cause-and-effect relationship or a condition and its consequence. Consider some of the if/then statements the Savior uses in this week’s reading:

  • “If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also” (John 14:7)
  • “If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.” (John 7:14)
  • “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15)
  • “If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father.” (John 14:28)
  • “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” (John 15:7)
  • “If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.” (John 15:10)
  • “Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.” (John 15:14)

What can these statements teach us about our relationship with Christ? What do they teach us about his love?
